The Smoking Dragon Festivals are located at the funky Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge. 3hrs from Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein so come on get out of the city and head for the hills. From the Festival site, take in the 360 degree panorama of the entire Northern Drakensberg range, from the Amphitheatre all the way to Cathkin Peak. The lodge is a great base from which to explore different sections of the park each day (if you are not just here to party.) Everyone gets free use of the bouldering cave, there are 2 dams to swim in and 300 hectares of veldt for kids to explore. The trails meander down to the Mpande River that flows through our lands. This is 5 star camping: No temporary icky toilets here, ablutions are clean, solar powered and fully serviced with hot showers and flushing loos. The lodge is built from stone, thatch and wood with stained glass, metal and wooden carvings, mosaics and beautiful indigenous rockeries. Some rooms are in converted grain silos, using solar power to heat the water. A black pool is made from real Drakensberg rock and is great for cooling off in the heat of the day. There is a barbecue area with a fire pit for people to braai and self catering kitchens. The groovy bar is a great meeting place for all, with hookah pipes, a jacuzzi and sauna in the thick of the action. Watch the sunset from our thatched loft.
